Material removal buy chip formation is the most important manufacturing process in the world today.  There is nothing we use in our everyday life that is not somehow impacted or influenced by something that was made by this process.  It literally is the reason we have society.

If this is true, and I’m certain that it is, what is it and why don’t you already know about it.  It is really a simple process and we've been doing it since the Stone Age.  The process is when you take something usually hard and usually sharp and use it to shear away material from something else.  The tool is the thing doing the cutting , and the workpiece is the thing being cut, right up until it has become the finished part and is delivered to the customer.

What are some other processes that perform material removal by chip formation?

Well there is milling … turning … and grinding that immediately come to mind.

If one of these processes wasn't used to make every consumer good you can see right now I guarantee that one of them was used to make the tools that made the things you can see.
